Al-Nawawi’s Commentary on Sahih Muslim is a book on Prophetic Hadith titled "Al-Minhaj Sharh Sahih Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj", authored by Yahya ibn Sharaf al-Nawawi. The book "Al-Minhaj fi Sharh Sahih Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj", known as "Sharh Sahih Muslim" or "Al-Nawawi’s Commentary on Muslim", is a commentary on Sahih Muslim. An excerpt from the introduction regarding al-Nawawi’s methodology in explaining hadith. The author said in the introduction to his commentary:
«Regarding the commentary on Sahih Muslim, may Allah have mercy on him, I have sought guidance from Allah the Generous, the Kind, the Merciful, in compiling a commentary of moderate length between brevity and verbosity; neither so brief as to be deficient, nor so lengthy as to be tedious. Were it not for the weakness of resolve, the scarcity of those interested, and the fear that the book would not spread due to the few seekers of long works, I would have expanded it to more than a hundred volumes, without repetition or superfluous additions, for its benefits are vast and its rewards, both hidden and apparent, are great. It is worthy of such, as it is the speech of the most eloquent of creation. However, I limit myself to moderation, strive to avoid excessive length, and prefer brevity in many instances.»
Al-Nawawi stated in his book: «I shall mention therein, by the will of Allah, a collection of its brilliant sciences, from the rulings of fundamentals and branches, etiquettes, and ascetic indications, clarifying precious points of the fundamental legal rules, explaining linguistic meanings, names of narrators, and correcting difficult terms. I shall also state the kunya (agnomens), names of fathers, and ambiguous identities, alert the reader to subtle conditions of some narrators, extract subtle points from the hidden sciences of hadith from the texts and chains of narration, and clarify the spellings of concordant and discordant names. I shall reconcile hadiths that appear to differ—which some who lack expertise in the craft of hadith and jurisprudence might deem contradictory—and point out, as they occur, the practical issues related to the hadith. I shall signal the evidence for all of this, except where brevity is necessary. I strive for conciseness and clarity of expression in all of this. When I cite something regarding names of narrators, language, difficult terms, rulings, meanings, or other transmissions, if it is famous, I generally do not attribute it to its sources due to their multiplicity, except rarely for beneficial purposes. If it is rare, I attribute it to its sources, unless I overlook a place due to the length of the discussion or because it was previously explained in past chapters. If a hadith, name, or word is repeated, I explain the intent at its first occurrence, and if I pass by it again, I mention that its explanation has already been provided in such-and-such a chapter. I may limit myself to mentioning its previous mention without attribution, or I may repeat the discussion due to the distance of the first mention, or contextual connections, or other required interests. I provide a number of introductions at the beginning of the book, which contain great benefit, by the will of Allah, and are needed by those who seek depth. I arrange this into successive chapters so that it is easier to study and less prone to boredom.»
Sahih Muslim is the most authentic book of hadith after Sahih al-Bukhari and is distinguished from it by the smoothness and ease of its classification; therefore, it was more widely circulated among students of knowledge and scholars. Many scholars have commented on it, and the most widely used and relied upon is the commentary of Imam al-Nawawi, which follows Muslim’s original arrangement while shortening the chains of narration and some repeated hadiths. Sahih Muslim is the most authentic book of hadith after Sahih al-Bukhari. Al-Nawawi’s commentary on Muslim is considered smoother and more accessible to the student than Fath al-Bari, the commentary on Sahih al-Bukhari by Imam Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani.
